Leaving Austria 1939
Paula Brings describes leaving Austria in February
1939 as the frontiers were closing all over Europe. She and her husband, Theodor, a physicist at the
University of Vienna, managed to escape the Nazi
Holocaust by the narrowest of margins and eventually
traveled to Manila by way of Ceylon and Australia. The image above is a composite photo montage made
from their marriage license, two identity cards, and
the Nazi stamp from their exit visa. The audio track is from an oral history interview
with Paula conducted by Peter Farquhar in December
1998 in Manila. The monsoon rain can be heard in
the background.
