Cathedral Spire First Ascent 1934

I loved to take pictures in the mountains,
of nature and all of the Sierra Club trips
I would go on. The trees or the peaks or
the cliffs, all of that was wonderful. I also
started taking movies of some of the out-
standing climbs in the Sierra.

I photographed the climb of the east face
of Whitney, and I photographed the first
ascent of the Cathedral Spire where I sat
[on the Valley wall] with my camera and
tripod and Bestor Robinson had a movie
camera, a sixteen millimeter, which he
used as they climbed. So when we put the
two, his shots and mine, together, it made
a very good movie reel.
